Will Moviegoers Go Ape Over Latest Planet?

How much of a rise will 20th Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes give the box office? Not an especially big one, according to box-office forecasters, who were notably way off in their calculations last week, when they predicted that Universal’s Cowboys & Aliens would do much more business than it did and that Sony/Columbia’s The Smurfs would do much less business than it did. They figure that this weekend, the Apes prequel will do around $30-35 million in business, while the latest gross-out comedy, Universal’s The Change-Up, will bag about $10-15 million. The big question is which movie will come in at No. 2? Cowboys & Aliens will be hoping for strong word-of-mouth to keep it from shedding a big share of its original take. On the other hand The Smurfs has been enjoying terrific midweek business, coming in well ahead of Cowboys every day of the week.

Update:

Daily Variety reported on its website today (Saturday) that the Planet of the Apes prequel grossed $19.5 million on Friday and is expected to double that figure through Sunday.

Minnelli also channels the Statue of Liberty as she puffs on a cigarette with a green robe draped across her body and her hair styled in spikes.

In another shot, the actress/singer appears to be topless and handcuffed, with just a bouquet of red roses to protect her modesty.

Moss Swaps Partying For The Quiet Life

Wild child Kate Moss has swapped partying for bingo and playing children's games, according to her best friend Sadie Frost.

The British supermodel is famous for her hellraising antics, and has been a firm fixture of the London social scene since she hit the bigtime in the 1990s.

The beauty married her rocker beau Jamie Hince last month, and her actress pal Frost reveals Moss has opted for a more relaxed lifestyle since her big day.

She tells Britain's Metro, "We still have a really good time, doing things normal grown-ups do with their children, playing games.

"On Saturdays we cook lunch for our kids and hang out in the garden. I had a great time on Saturday night playing bingo at home with the children.

"She is a huge inspiration. She's godmother to (my daughter) Iris, and (her daughter) Lila is my godchild."

Reynolds And Theron End Brief Romance - Report

Ryan Reynolds and Charlize Theron have ended their rumoured relationship after just two months, according to a U.S. report.

The actors were first linked in June, after Reynolds' motorcycle was spotted outside Theron's Hollywood home.

Representatives for the South African beauty fuelled the claims last month by refusing to confirm or deny she was dating Scarlett Johansson's ex-husband, but it appears the romance has already fizzled out.

According to Us Weekly magazine, Reynolds called off the fling in late July.

A source says, "They're both too busy. And they were hardly ever together anyway."

Reynolds' divorce from Johansson became official on 1 July.

Coppola And Mars Will Marry In Historic Village Palace

Filmmaker Sofia Coppola will marry singer Thomas Mars on the historic grounds of the picturesque Palazzo Margherita in southern Italy later this month.

The Lost in Translation director will exchange vows with Phoenix frontman Mars in a civil ceremony on 27 August on her dad Francis Ford Coppola's lavish estate in the small village of Bernalda.

Francis Ford Coppola's great nephew Gaetano Russo tells wwd.com, "The ceremony will mark the end of renovations at the palace, which will soon be inaugurated as a resort, open to the public."

And the Coppolas plan to turn the nuptials into a celebration for the whole village - they will screen scenes from films by both Sofia and her famous father on the walls of 10 buildings around Bernalda.

Coppola's representative confirmed the engagement in May. The couple has two young daughters together.

Davis' Weight Gain Wasn't Enough For The Help

Actress Viola Davis piled on 25 pounds (11.34 kilograms) for her role as a middle-aged maid in new movie The Help - but still had to wear body pads to appear thicker than she was.

The usually-svelte Oscar nominee stars alongside Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard in the big screen adaptation of author Kathryn Stockett's 2009 novel, about the 1960s racial divide between middle class white families and their African-American maids in Jackson, Mississippi.

Davis indulged in fatty fried Southern foods to bulk up for the part, but her weight gain wasn't quite enough.

She says, "I had to gain 25 pounds during The Help and then I was padded. I gained weight by eating Mississippi food. They fry the butter before they put it on the bread and then they fry the bread!"

Swinton Didn't Know Importance Of Oscar Win

Actress Tilda Swinton had "no idea" how prestigious it was to win an Academy Award because she doesn't own a television and has never been interested in Oscars news.

The British star was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in 2007 drama Michael Clayton and it was Swinton's first time attending the biggest event in the Hollywood calendar.

The actress acknowledges the professional clout that came with landing such a coveted honour, but insists it is "not really" of any personal significance for her or her kids - who couldn't care less about the Oscar statuette.

She tells W magazine, "I have to admit that I'd never seen the Oscars on television and really had no idea that it was so important. It was a very long show, but it did move me up from the children's table, professionally, in Hollywood.

"When I brought my Oscar home and showed the children, nobody knew what it was. The thing sat on the kitchen table for two weeks. It was kind of meaningless to them."

Swinton decided against capitalising on her new-found status in Hollywood and instead chose to return to the smaller, independent films that she was more moved by.

She adds, "After winning, I went straight to Milan (Italy) and started I Am Love. Since then, I haven't done another Hollywood film."

Thompson To Revamp Annie Screenplay For Willow Smith

Oscar winner Emma Thompson has signed on to rework the classic Annie script for Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith's new musical.

Glee creator Ryan Murphy let the big news slip while explaining why he is no longer attached to the project, which will star the Hollywood couple's daughter Willow as the titular orphan.

Murphy tells Deadline.com, "They are doing a movie version and I loved the idea that Jay-z was going to do the music. I met with Jay and talked to him about it. I wanted to write the script and direct it. And then (Murphy's new TV project) American Horror got picked up and Willow is a certain age and you need a script by November. I didn't think I could do it.

"So now she's (Pinkett Smith) got Emma Thompson, who is 50 million times better than me. Love her. I wish I could have had the time to do it. The thing that was the biggest turn on for me was Jay. We talked about how we were going to set it (Annie) in Detroit."

Actress Thompson has frequently won acclaim for her scriptwriting skills, and she won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Sense & Sensibility.

Richards Gave Sheen's Hooker Pal Relationship Advice Over Dinner

Denise Richards was so comfortable dining with a prostitute her ex-husband Charlie Sheen had hired for the night, she gave her romance tips when the actor excused himself and went to the bathroom.

Sheen invited the actress to join him and "some friends" for dinner during an infamous 2010 trip to New York, but when she got to the restaurant, it quickly became clear she was dining with her ex, a pal and their hookers.

Richards recalls, "I said to the women, 'When did you guys all meet?' And they said, 'Tonight!' So they were hookers... I thought, 'Ok, I can be a grown-up about this, suck it up and have a nice meal... It's not my place to judge.'"

But she was caught offguard when Sheen's date, Capri, turned to her for relationship advice.

She adds, "Charlie went to the bathroom... and I find myself giving her advice about her boyfriend... (She was) saying that she didn't know if she should tell him that she was a prostitute... I said, 'I think I would probably not say anything'.

"I was nervous because I took a picture with her before I knew that she was in entertainment and so in my head I'm like, 'Oh my God, I just took a picture with this prostitute.'"

But the night started to get "a little crazy" and Richards excused herself and went back to her hotel suite.

The following morning the news broke that Sheen and his hooker pal had been involved in an altercation over a missing watch and the actor allegedly trashed his room, while Capri cowered in the bathroom.

Injured Atkinson 'All Fine'

A representative for actor Rowan Atkinson has assured fans the Mr. Bean star is doing well after he was hospitalised following a car crash on Thursday night.

The funnyman reportedly lost control of his $1 million (£625,000) McLaren F1 supercar while driving through Cambridgeshire, England, and smashed the rare vehicle into a tree and a lamppost.

He was admitted to a local hospital with a minor shoulder injury, but Atkinson is expected to continue his recovery at home.

His spokesperson tells TMZ.com, "(Atkinson is) all fine and going home (from the hospital) soon."

Ramsay Sues In-laws

British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is taking a family feud to court by suing a number of his wife's relatives.

The TV cook's rift with his in-laws hit the headlines last year when his father-in-law Chris Hutcheson left his post as CEO of Gordon Ramsay Holdings (Grh) and subsequently filed a lawsuit against Ramsay.

The chef later spoke out to insist he felt "betrayed" and "let down" by his in-laws, and he has now stepped up the feud by filing suit against Hutcheson and a number of his family members.

Ramsay filed a writ at London's High Court on Friday taking aim at his wife Tana's father, as well as her mother Greta, sister Orlanda Butland, brother Adam and sister-in-law Adelaide, and Hutcheson's alleged mistress Sara Stewart, according to Britain's Daily Mail.

In the documents, Ramsay accuses Hutcheson of allegedly hacking into his personal and company files, withdrawing millions of dollars from the firm and using the money to reportedly fund a double life with Stewart.

The chef also alleges Hutcheson put his wife and son on the company payroll without permission and wrote massive cheques to himself.

A spokesperson for Ramsay and his wife tells the Daily Mail, "Clearly, this whole episode has been hugely distressing for Gordon and Tana. All they want is to put the events of last autumn behind them and move on, but given the enormity of what has been uncovered they have no option but to let the legal process take its course."

Meanwhile, Smeetesh Kakkad, a solicitor representing the Hutcheson family defendants, says, "They will be responding through the legal process and have no comment to make at this stage."

Atkinson Leaves Hospital

British actor Rowan Atkinson has been discharged from hospital after sustaining a fractured shoulder blade in a car crash this week (beg01Aug11).

The 56-year-old funnyman was hospitalised after crashing his luxury McLaren F1 supercar, which spun off the road, hitting a tree and a road sign before catching fire. Atkinson left the medical facility in Peterborough, England in a wheelchair on Friday and was driven away in a private ambulance.

The accident occurred as Atkinson was driving home following work on his new movie Johnny English Reborn, in which he plays a hapless secret agent.

The Mr. Bean star's agent Peter Bennett-Jones tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "I understand he has a fractured shoulder blade which is very painful and why he needed to stay in overnight. He is shaken but not stirred. I think he was in pain and had painkillers.

"The car has been removed and I'm sure he won't want it to be written off. He will want to get it repaired straight away...

"He will be very rattled and I think he'll want to keep as low profile as possible."

Prop Man Wins Victory Over George Lucas

Andrew Ainsworth

The British prop designer who created the Stormtrooper helmets for Star Wars has won an important legal battle in the U.K. where he is selling replicas of them. Although a U.S. court had previously ruled against the prop man, Andrew Ainsworth, the U.K. Supreme Court judges upheld a ruling by an appellate court in 2009 that allowed Ainsworth to continue making and selling the helmets. In an interview with the BBC, Ainsworth said, “This is a massive victory, a total victory. We’ve already got the champagne out.” A Lucas spokesman said that the court decision was based on an anomaly in British law.»

Movie Reviews: The Smurfs

The Smurfs is receiving little of the admiration that critics bestowed on that other movie with characters who were blue and in 3D. But here and there it is picking up some mostly favorable reviews. Neil Genzlinger in the New York Times observes that the funniest moments in the movie “are either raunchy or scandalous,” which make the movie “surprisingly tolerable” for adults. His conclusion: “On a hot summer day, The Smurfs is a decent enough excuse to haul the little ones into an air-conditioned theater.” Peter Hartlaub in the San Francisco Chronicle writes that it’s actually “a better movie than anyone could have possibly expected, thanks in large part to an honest effort by

Movie Reviews: Crazy, Stupid, Love.

See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news»

With a title like Crazy, Stupid, Love., the producers would appear to be making it easy for critics to bash it. The remarkable thing is that many are turning that title inside out. A. O. Scott in the New York Times, for example, begins his review by writing, “Crazy, Stupid, Love. is, on balance, remarkably sane and reasonably smart.” He goes on to write that it’s “a smooth blend of modern comic genres with a surprising undercurrent of dark, difficult emotion.” That’s the conclusion of quite a number of critics. After writing a tag line for the movie ads (“one from the heart and one for the heart”), Betsy Sharkey in the Los Angeles Times writes that Dan Fogelman’s script is “driven by realism without cynicism that is so winningly sentimental it is almost enough to turn that word into praise rather than the pejorative dig it has become.” Wesley Morris in the Boston Globe wonders about the punctuation in that title, noting that it has two commas and a period. “What are these words modifying?” he asks. “Is ‘love’ a noun or a verb? Is the amount of punctuation in a movie title proportional to the pleasure to be found in the movie itself? The answers are: I don’t know, I don’t know, I can’t tell, and evidently.” Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer writes that the filmmakers “take all the formula ingredients and blend them into a satisfying — and tasty — concoction.” And Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times seems especially grateful to have a romantic comedy come to theaters sans raunch. “At the end,” he concludes, “I felt an undeniable satisfaction.” But the movie gets little of that from most other critics. Rex Reed’s review in the New York Observer seizes on that title: “It’s not nearly crazy enough to clear the clogged arteries of summer comedies, and when the love appears, it s in all the wrong places. Oh well, at least they nailed the stupid part.” Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post is also left uncharmed by the movie. “What the filmmakers clearly meant to be sweet and lighthearted instead too often feels forced, contrived and hopelessly banal,” she concludes. Likewise Peter Howell in the Toronto Star remarks that “rarely does the dialogue exceed sitcom banality.” One thing that all of the critics agree on is that the performances of the cast, who in include Steve Carell, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Bacon and Ryan Gosling are superb. And many of them particularly single out Gosling. Writes Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal: “You’d expect Mr. Carell to be funny … and he certainly is. The revelation is Mr. Gosling’s comic chops.”

Movie Reviews: Cowboys And Aliens

See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news»

The reviews of Cowboys and Aliens are about as mismatched as, well, cowboys and aliens. Critics either buy the ridiculous concept (this is not a comedy, by the way,) or they don’t. Most don’t. Rex Reed in the New York Observer calls the plot of the movie “idiotic” but allows that it could prove to be a big hit. “Never underestimate the desperation of summer moviegoers to escape reality no matter how much they trash their I.Q.s. They’ll do anything to get out of a heat wave,” he writes. Claudia Puig in USA Today observes that while the movie may be intended as “an explosive genre mash-up,” it ends up being “a listless misfire.” Steven Rea in the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that the real problem is that the two movie genres — western and sci-fi — never mesh in this movie. “Instead, it’s somewhere in between, neither fish nor fowl (nor extraterrestrial), and that’s a problem.” Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times calls it “the most cockamamie plot I’ve witnessed in many a moon.” On the other hand, his Chicago colleague, Michael Phillips of the Tribune, deems it “the unlikeliest good movie of the year.” Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post also thinks that the concept works. “A loving throwback to the classic westerns and sci-fi adventures of yore, this celebration of two of cinema s most revered genres doesn’t stint in lavishing their most cherished conventions with even-handed affection and respect,” she enthuses.

New Adversary Lands In Movies’ Comic-book War

In another battle of comic-book characters, Cowboys and Aliens will do battle with Captain America at the box office this weekend, and most forecasters are saying that the battle is likely to be close. They’re giving the edge to the newcomer, saying that it should bring in around $40-45 million, while Captain America: The First Avenger is likely to generate about $35-40 million in ticket sales. Third place should go to The Smurfs with about $25-30 million, while the third week of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 will likely end up with around $20-25 million. A third newcomer, the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love., is not expected to do more than around $15 million in business. However, it reportedly only cost around $40 million to produce.

Photo Finish At Box Office

With Universal’s Cowboys and Aliens coming in well below analysts’ forecasts and Sony’s The Smurfs coming in well above them, the result was a rare tie for first place — at least so far as Sunday’s studio estimates were concerned. Each studio figured that its contender earned $36.2 million over the weekend and will now have to wait until Monday’s final tally to learn which movie actually came out ahead. Warner Bros.’ Crazy, Stupid Love. opened at the high end of estimates with $19.3 million to place fifth, behind third place Captain America, with $24.9 million and fourth place Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 with $21.9 million.»

Fawcett Barbie Doll To Raise Funds For Her Cancer Charity

A Barbie doll bearing the likeness of late actress Farrah Fawcett has been created to raise funds for the star's cancer research foundation.

The Charlie's Angels icon set up her own charity organisation, the Farrah Fawcett Foundation, several years before she lost her battle with cancer in 2009 at the age of 62..

And now the actress' best pal Alana Stewart, who is president of the firm, has signed a deal with doll makers Mattel to create a figure based on Fawcett's most iconic 1976 poster, in which she is seen wearing a sexy red swimsuit.

Stewart says she always asks herself, "What would Farrah do?" and is convinced the late star would "love" the doll, adding "(It has) a sexy, all-American beauty; there is an innocence to it. When we were in Germany (for treatments), Farrah told me she was glad she got cancer because now she could make a difference."

The doll is priced at $34 (£21).

Carell Thrills Leno Audience With Free Movie Passes

Steve Carell thrilled audience members watching U.S. programme The Tonight Show With Jay Leno by walking onto the set and giving everyone free passes to see his new movie Crazy, Stupid, Love.

The Office star dropped by the show seemingly unannounced on Friday and interrupted the host's comedic stand-up, much to the delight of the surprised crowd.

Carell acknowledged America's ailing economy and soaring movie ticket prices - and then invited the entire studio to see his new comedy at a nearby Los Angeles cinema for free.

He said, "I happened to be driving by the studio and I heard you talking about the economy. And it is bad. I'm not here to talk about my new film Crazy, Stupid, Love, which opens today. That is not the reason I am here. I am here because I care Jay. I care about these people, I care about what they're going through.

"Jay, tonight I would like to be your Oprah. I would like to offer, to everyone in this studio, free passes to the AMC Burbank (theatre), tonight, a screening of Crazy, Stupid, Love."

Carell then rushed into the cheering audience, and handed out the passes, yelling, "You get a ticket! You get a ticket! And you get a ticket!"

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 raked in $21.9 million (£13.5 million) to land fourth place, and Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell's new romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, rounded out the top five after premiering with $19.3 million (£12 million).

Cheadle Once 'Got Shot At' In New York

Actor Don Cheadle narrowly escaped a life-or-death situation while living in New York during the 1980s - he once "got shot at" in the street.

The Crash actor, who is originally from Kansas, first moved to the Big Apple to star in a play at the Public venue - and although he enjoyed city life, he admits it was a dangerous place to be.

He tells the New York Daily News, "Back then, stuff was always going down... I even got shot at for the first time in New York. It was great. I was leaving my friend's house way up on the Upper West Side, walking down a completely deserted street by myself, when I heard a gunshot and the street door next to me shattered.

"I don't know if they were aiming for me or (if) it was just a stray bullet. All I know is I just kept running and thinking, 'New York is f

Kardashian's Safety Fears After Fans Visit Home

Kim Kardashian is planning to move out of her Los Angeles home after she was left feeling "violated" by a series of fan encounters at the property.

The socialite, who is to wed New Jersey Nets basketball player Kris Humphries later this month, has ordered her devotees not to visit her mansion in the hope of meeting her.

In a series of posts on her Twitter.com page, she writes, "I pride myself in being very open & available to my fans, but the one place I won't interact or tolerate people showing up to is my home.

"I won't answer my gate & I don't find it appropriate. This is my personal space & my comfort zone & when that is violated, I have a problem. I luv 2 meet my fans, you mean the world 2 me but I please ask that you don't show up 2 my home.

"It scares me.... Security will be enforced 24hrs a day. Looks like I will be moving soon."

Aniston Throws Farewell House Party

Jennifer Aniston threw a final house party at her sprawling $42 million (£28 million) Beverly Hills mansion on Friday to celebrate selling the property.

The former Friends star bought the estate in 2006 for $13.5 million (£9 million), and then spent more than two years renovating it.

She moved in just before her 40th birthday in 2009, but put the mansion on the market earlier this year as she prepares to move to New York.

And after it was snapped up by a buyer, Aniston celebrated by throwing a bash for her closest pals and new boyfriend Justin Theroux, according to People.com.

A source tells the website,
"Jen had a party at her Beverly Hills house Friday night - a little going away party since she plans on spending so much more time in New York.

"She just wanted to have one more great get together with friends at the house before she moved out."

The Brits have been dating since last year and went public with their romance at the 2010 Coachella music festival in California.

A source tells the publication, "Daisy moved in with Mark Ronson when they were dating but she was a lot younger then. She wanted to wait until she was certain it was the right thing to do with Matt. They're really serious."

Bloom Keeping Musketeer Costumes For Son's Dressing Up Box

Orlando Bloom has taken home the costumes he sported in the new The Three Musketeers movie, as they'll make the perfect fancy dress outfits for son Flynn when he grows up.

The actor donned a series of intricate 17th century period garments for his role as the Duke of Buckingham in the 3D reimagining of Alexandre Dumas' classic tale.

And Bloom, who is married to model Miranda Kerr, has kept his kooky on-screen wardrobe to hand down to his son, who was born in January.

He says, "When I worked on The Three Musketeers I embraced all of it. I think that getting dressed up and stuff - I love a frock - really informs what you're doing.

"The boots are staying, and the costumes, too. That's definitely a fancy dress outfit one day down the line - probably for my son."

Special badges were also awarded to soul star Adele, Olympic gold winner James Cracknell and British TV presenter James May.

Deathly Hallows Smashes Weekend Record

Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 shattered one record after another over the weekend, culminating with an estimated $168.6 million for the three-days, making it the all-time champion for a regular weekend opener. The previous record, $158.4 million, set in 2008, was held by another Warner Bros. film, The Dark Knight, but that film did not have 3D premium pricing going for it. Earlier, Deathly Hallows broke the record for a midnight debut, for a Friday opener, and for an IMAX debut. The film had already earned $157.5 million overseas. The only other film to open wide, Disney’s Winnie the Pooh, outperformed most estimates, taking in about $8 million to finish in sixth place.

Update: Two more records fell today as Warner Bros. announced that the Harry Potter finale earned a record $307 million overseas this weekend bringing its worldwide total to $475.6 million, another record.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo: 1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, $168.6 million; 2. Transformers: Dark of the Moon, $21.3 million; 3. Horrible Bosses, $17.6 million; 4. Zookeeper, $12.3 million; 5. Cars 2, $8.3 million; 6. Winnie the Pooh, $8 million; 7. Bad Teacher, $5.2 million; 8. Larry Crowne, $2.6 million; 9. Super 8, $1.9 million; 10. Midnight in Paris, $1.9 million.

Studio Yanks Surprise Captain America Ending For Critics

Paramount decided not to show critics a “surprise” sequence tacked on to the upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger following the closing credits but did show it at certain sneak screenings on Sunday. The result is that critics are indignant, and the secret sequence has popped up online. MovieLine.com observed today (Monday) that “journalists and critics aren’t likely to pirate films, especially during monitored screenings on a studio lot; it is an honor system, after all — the press trusts studios to provide access to their product, and studios trust the press to cover fairly and not spoil their films.” But already some reviews by non-journalists who attended the public screenings have popped up online, several including spoilers. Although one review on a blog called My.Spill.com includes this postscript: “Make sure you stay through the credits. usually they do things that really isn’t

Report: Studio Replaced 3D Projector At Potter Premiere

For the London premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Warner Bros. removed the RealD 3D projection equipment and had it replaced with a Dolby 3D projector, which produces a brighter picture, according to Btig media analyst Richard Greenfield. Greenfield, who has warned that moviegoers are becoming increasingly upset by 3D premiums and darker screen images, suggests that exhibitors erred when most of them “took options in return for RealD exclusivity.” Said Greenfield: “We continue to believe these exclusive relationships in the Us were a short-sighted decision — the three majors should would have benefited from robust competition in the U.S. (similar to what we are seeing overseas).” Greenfield also asks, “If the largest studio in the U.S.

Woody’S Latest Is His Biggest Hit

Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris collected an additional $1.9 million over the weekend, bringing its gross to date to $41.8 million and thereby putting it ahead of his most successful film, Hannah and Her Sisters, which took in $40.1 million over its entire run in 1986. While the earlier figure is not adjusted for inflation, writers have indicated that inflation has not had much of an effect on Allen’s budgets. He still churns films out about one a year for not much more than he did in 1986. The film has also earned $33.5 million overseas, to bring its worldwide total to $73.9 million.»

Rango Guns Down Rivals In Home Video Debut

See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news»

Paramount may again have been thinking “Who needs DreamWorks Animation?” when its own home-grown Rango climbed to the top of the DVD and Blu-ray sales charts despite being in stores only two days last week. Moreover, according to Home Media, magazine, 46 percent of its sales were recorded for Blu-ray discs. Earlier this month Paramount established its own animation division, amid speculation that it plans to dump its deal with DreamWorks Animation at the end of its current contract. But Katzenberg seemingly played down that speculation, remarking, “Their going into the lower-end of the animation business isn’t going to impact DreamWorks at all.”»

Showdown Looms Between Potter And Capt. America

Analysts are predicting a tight race at the box office this weekend between two blockbusters, as Captain America makes its debut and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 goes into its second week. According to box-office gurus, each film is expected to earn around $60 million. While several forecasters give Deathly Hallows the edge, given its record-breaking opening last week, others suggest that that big opening cold be the reason that it falls to Captain America this weekend. Today’s (Friday) Los Angeles Times commented: “Because so many fans rushed out to see the movie immediately, it’s unclear just how big the drop-off in receipts will be during its second weekend in release.” Also opening this weekend is the Sony/Screen Gems romcom Friends with Benefits, which ought to bring in around $25-30 million, a solid number given the fact that it didn’t cost much more than that to produce. »

Moviegoers Mild About Harry In Second Week As Captain Triumphs

Forget what you heard about a tight race between Paramount’s Captain America and Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 at the box office this weekend. Despite fewer 3D theaters — fewer screens in general — no IMAX, and far less hype, Captain America reigned triumphant at the box office on Friday with $25.75 million in ticket sales, while the Potter finale fell to second with $14.63 million. Most box-office forecasters had figured that each film would earn around $60 million over the three-day weekend, but it now looks as if Captain America will earn considerably more than that and Potter considerably less. Indeed, Potter might very well set yet another record this weekend — biggest second-week drop-off in history. Also opening this weekend, Sony’s Friends With Benefits, took in a lower-than-expected $6.8 million on Friday. »

Captain America Does What Voldemort Didn’T

Captain America took down Harry Potter over the weekend, sending box-office gurus back to forecasting school. Although most had expected a tight race, with each film taking in around $60 million, the race in reality turned out to be not close at all. Captain America wound up with a Marvel-ous $65.8 million, while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 dropped 72 percent to $48.1 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates. It was the biggest second-week drop-off percentage-wise for any movie playing in more than 1,000 theaters since the remake of Friday the 13th dropped 80.4 percent in 2009. (But then, horror films have a notorious reputation for dropping precipitously in their second week.) In terms of actual dollars, no film in history has dropped so steeply as Deathly Hallows, but then no film in history had as far to drop, given its record-breaking debut. Also opening this weekend, Sony/Screen Gems’s Friends With Benefits earned $18.5 million — a figure that was below industry expectations.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo:

1. Captain America: The First Avenger, $65.8 million; 2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, $48 million; 3. Friends With Benefits, $18.5 million; 4. Transformers: Dark of the Moon, $12 million; 5. Horrible Bosses, $11.7 million; 6. Zookeeper, $8.7 million; 7. Cars 2, $5.7 million; 8. Winnie the Pooh, $5.1 million; 9. Bad Teacher, $2.6 million; 10. Midnight in Paris, $1.9 million.

Update:

Final Figures for the Top Five Films:

1. Captain America: The First Avenger, $65,058,524

2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, $47,422,212

3. Friends with Benefits, $18,622,150

4. Transformers: Dark of the Moon, $12,051,735

5. Horrible Bosses, $11,884,319»

Palin Documentary Won’T Concede Defeat

After attracting mostly Sarah Palin fans — and not many of those — during the past two weeks, Stephen K. Bannon is withdrawing The Undefeated from theatrical release and plans to release it on video on demand and pay-per-view beginning Sept. 1. It will then be released on DVD on Oct. 4, Arc Entertainment announced on Sunday. It indicated that it also has a deal with Walmart for a “Special Edition” DVD that will contain additional content available only to Walmart customers. It did not describe what sort of additional content the Walmart edition will contain. The Hollywood Reporter said today (Monday) that The Undefeated collected just $24,000 over the weekend, for a per-theater average of just $1,714.»

Strong Debuts For Art-house Fare

Two art-house films made impressive debuts over the weekend. Sarah’s Key, starring Kristin Scott Thomas and released by The Weinstein Co., earned $117,045 at four theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a per-theater average of $23,409. (By contrast, Captain America averaged $17,719 per theater.) And Fox Searchlight’s Another Earth also debuted in four theaters with $78,413 in ticket sales or an average of $19,600 per theater. Meanwhile, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris remained in the top ten, barely budging from its week-to-week gross of just under $2 million. Now showing in just 621 theaters after 10 weeks, the film actually ticked upwards by a small percentage over the weekend even while losing 85 venues. The movie has grossed $44.9 million domestically.»

Gyllenhaals' Dad Marries On Hawaiian Beach

Jake Gyllenhaal and his sister Maggie jetted to Hawaii at the weekend (23-24Jul11) to attend their dad's wedding.

The Hollywood stars watched as their filmmaker dad Stephen Gyllenhaal tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on a beach on Oahu's North Shore.

The siblings went barefoot and donned flower garlands around their necks for the nuptials, which were shared with just 30 guests.

Stephen Gyllenhaal split from Jake and Maggie's mum, screenwriter Naomi Foner, in 2009.

Evans Relies On Fellow Action Rookie Hemsworth

Chris Evans has been relying on fellow film superhero Chris Hemsworth for support in conquering his "raging insecurity" since becoming an action star as Captain America.

Evans' blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger - his first outing as the Marvel icon - is currently at the top of the U.S. box office chart.

He admits he is struggling with the attention the role has afforded him, and feels a special kinship with his The Avengers co-star Hemsworth, who shot to fame when his movie Thor debuted at number one in May.

Evans tells Us Weekly, "It's tough to feel (like a sex symbol) standing next to... Chris Hemsworth. But I'm fine with it. I don't consider myself that way. Many actors are saddled with raging insecurity and I am no exception. I'm drowning in it.

"Hemsworth and I are definitely in uncharted waters, but it's great that we have one another."

The 30 year old admits he was in awe of Hemsworth after seeing him transform into the hammer-wielding god Thor on the set of The Avengers.

He adds, "Hemsworth - have you seen him? He's huge! He puts the cape on and the wig and it's like, 'Jeez!' The guy's the f

Injured Wilde 'Limped' Through Cowboys & Aliens Filming

Actress Olivia Wilde suffered in silence as she "limped" her way through filming on new sci-fi western Cowboys & Aliens - because she didn't want to be the only castmember complaining about injuries sustained during the action shoot.

The Tron: Legacy beauty stars alongside Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford in director Jon Favreau's latest comic book adaptation and Wilde admits she jumped at the chance to pull off her own stunts in the movie.

She tells WENN, "My favourite moment was riding on a horse galloping next to Daniel in between two cranes. And I had my feet out of the stirrups and my hands very loosely on the reins because I had a bungee cord attached to my back which at one point, unbeknownst to me, would be yanked back and I'd be pulled 40 feet into the air as though I'd be lassoed by an alien.

"It was wild because they were originally going to do it with a stunt double and then it looked really fun so I wanted to try it... Our stunt coordinator Tommy Harper went to Favreau and said, 'I think she can do it.' So they rigged me up and everybody is sitting there biting their nails thinking, 'What are we doing?!' I did it and then I did it 11 more times. It was so wild because once I was up there I had to stay up there waiting for them to reset and I was floating 30 feet in the air and I could see for miles the mountains and the canyons and the deserts. It was really a thrill to do those things."

But Wilde was not prepared for the bruising she'd sustain from the prop gun she had to carry throughout the shoot - and she refused to say anything about it until filming wrapped.

She says, "It was also a challenge riding the horse in a big skirt with a gun. I had this giant bruise on my hip bone from the gun slamming against my hip but I didn't complain because no one else was complaining about bruises on their hips so I limped along."

Newton To Make Stage Debut In West End

British actress Thandie Newton is swapping Hollywood for the London stage in a West End production of political thriller Death And The Maiden.

The Crash star will make her big stage debut as Paulina, a former political prisoner traumatised by a captor she never saw, who sets out to seek revenge years later.

The show, a revival of Ariel Dorfman's 1990 play, will be directed by Jeremy Herrin and begin previews at the Comedy Theatre on 13 October.

Trump Ordered To Return Golfer's Membership Fee

Real estate mogul Donald Trump has been ordered to pay $200,000 (£125,000) to a golfer he wrongfully banned from his prestigious Florida country club.

The reality TV star suspended Harry Theodoracopulos from his West Palm Beach Trump International Golf Club in 2009 for allegedly verbally abusing staff members and disturbing patrons by speaking too loudly on the course.

Theodoracopulos later took legal action against Trump because he was not notified by the club's admission's committee or given an opportunity to argue his side of the story.

Judge Timothy McCarthy has now ruled against The Apprentice star and ordered him to reimburse the golfer for the pricey membership fee, since Trump violated the club's by-laws and made the decision on his own.

However, Trump plans to appeal the ruling.

His lawyer, Jill Martin, tells the Palm Beach Post, "We believe the club's actions were justified. The court misapplied the facts and misapplied the law."

Cage To Star In Indie Musical

Actor Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in an independent musical with the Hollywood screenwriter/director who helped to land him an Oscar nomination in 2002.

The Ghost Rider star earned Academy Award recognition for his turn in Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation and now the pair is set to reunite for forthcoming project, Frank or Francis.

Comedians Steve Carell and Jack Black are also attached to the movie.

Plot details have yet to be released, but the story is said to revolve around an author called Frank, who clashes with an online blogger named Francis, reports trade paper Daily Variety.

Production on the film, written and directed by Kaufman, will begin in January.

Dame Maggie Attends Tyzack Memorial Service

Actress Dame Maggie Smith and playwright Alan Bennett were among the mourners who gathered in London on Saturday to pay tribute to late British star Margaret Tyzack.

The revered actress, best known for her role as Winifred on U.K. TV's The Forsyte Saga, passed away on 25 June following a short illness, and a memorial service was held in her honour at the Church of St. Michael and All Angels in Blackheath.

Friends and former colleagues joined Tyzack's grieving family at the ceremony, where Sir Nicholas Hytner, the artistic director of the National Theatre, and actress Frances De La Tour both addressed the crowd.

McIntyre Gained Over 45 Pounds For Spartacus Role

Actor Liam McIntyre was forced to gain over 45 pounds (20.5 kilograms) before taking on the lead role in Spartacus: Vengeance because TV executives thought he looked "emaciated".

The star was cast as the historical gladiator earlier this year after Spartacus: Blood and Sand actor Andy Whitfield was forced to step down to undergo treatment for cancer.

McIntyre steps into Whitfield's shoes for the second season of the U.S. series, now titled Spartacus: Vengeance, but he admits he almost lost out on the role because he was not the buff warrior TV bosses had envisioned when he auditioned.

Speaking on U.S. news show Access Hollywood Live, his co-star, Manu Bennett, says, "I had to screen test him. He was emaciated. But his eyes and his intention were fantastic... but (everybody was like), 'His body is wasted.'"

However, McIntyre was determined to pack on the pounds to win the coveted role.

He says, "I had to work out non-stop. I lost 20 kilograms (for a film), which in pounds, is (like) 45 pounds, it's like a fifth of my body weight or something. And then I had to put it all back on, plus muscle, and that was just non-stop training."

Fighter Ortiz Escapes Car Crash Uninjured

Mixed martial arts star Tito Ortiz has escaped unscathed after his luxury Rolls Royce Phantom was wrecked in a three-car collision in Costa Mesa, California.

No one was injured in the crash, which took place on Sunday afternoon, but Ortiz admits he shed a few tears over the damage caused to the front bumper and grill on his expensive vehicle.

It is unclear who was responsible for the accident, but the boyfriend of former porn star Jenna Jameson claims his insurance company won't pay for repairs to the Phantom.

In a post on Twitter.com, he writes, "It will come out of my pocket. Sucks... I cried a little because it's my favorite car but it will be new in no time."

Photos of the damaged car have since been posted on TMZ.com.

GaGa was accused of ripping off "Judas" by a singer named Rebecca Francescatti. The second single from album "Born This Way" was claimed by Rebecca as a copy of her 1999 song "Juda". Through a lawyer, she said, "Though the songs are different styles, the composition is the same and the chorus is the same melody."

Rebecca furthermore claimed that the similarities between the two songs are not a coincidence because her former bass player named Brian Gaynor is now employed by a music company that wrote 17 songs on GaGa's recent album. Thus, Rebecca "is

Transformers: Dark of the Moon crossed the $1-billion mark in worldwide ticket sales on Tuesday, Paramount announced today (Wednesday). The third installment of the franchise has nabbed $338 million in North America and $663 million overseas. 3D Strikes Out At Home

See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news»

With 3D on the wane in U.S. theaters, it is already being shunned almost completely by home video enthusiasts, Btig analyst Richard Greenfield said on Wednesday. Greenfield took note of the fact that At&T has dropped Espn 3D from its channel lineup citing poor customer interest and price. Its decision, Greenfield said, “is especially concerning for 3D, as sports was supposed to be one of the big drivers of 3D adoption in the home.” The mammoth video game software company EA also appears to be phasing out 3D. Its CEO, John Riccitiello, recently told shareholders, “We have not seen a big uptake for 3D gaming. We have not seen a big uptake in 3D TVs in the home, at least not yet. We are not here trying to drive a market. We are here to react to what consumers are looking for.” Greenfield also dubbed Nintendo’s 3Ds system “a complete failure.”»

Home Media magazine said on its website on Wednesday that the ad campaign will be unveiled today (Thursday) in USA Today under the banner, “There’s a New Kiosk in Town.” The ad explains that anyone using a Blockbuster Express kiosk between now and Sunday can get a free one-night rental by using the promotion code Simple at the kiosks.»

Ice Hockey Star Avery Arrested

Actress Elisha Cuthbert's ex-boyfriend, ice hockey superstar Sean Avery, has been arrested in Los Angeles after allegedly beating up a cop.

The New York Rangers star reportedly argued with police who arrived at his Hollywood Hills home, responding to a noise complaint from a neighbour, early on Friday.

The 31 year old is accused of pushing one of the officers and slamming the door in his face.

Following the confrontation, additional officers were called to the home and Avery was eventually was taken into custody.

He is being held on suspicion of battery, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Avery has had problems with his infamous confrontational attitude and signed up for anger-management classes following a statement he made about a rival player before a 2008 game.

He was suspended by the National Hockey League after he told a reporter that a Calgary Flames player who was dating Cuthbert, his ex, was "falling in love with sloppy seconds".

Flight Attendant Sues News Outlets Over Schwarzenegger Lovechild Mix-up

A former flight attendant has filed suit against a handful of news outlets for incorrectly reporting her son is Arnold Schwarzenegger's lovechild.

Tammy Tousignant and her husband Tom allege the news organisations, including the National Enquirer and Gawker.com, defamed them by making the false claims, which began in 2003 and were repeated earlier this year when the actor-turned-politician confessed he had fathered a lovechild over a decade ago in May.

The documents, filed in Los Angeles at the end of last month, state, "Tanner Tousignant is not the illegitimate son of Arnold Schwarzenegger... The reports regarding the Tousignants are entirely false."

The National Enquirer was one of the first outlets to publish articles suggesting Tammy, who worked as Schwarzenegger's private plane stewardess, had romanced the former California Governor and the affair resulted in the birth of her son, Tanner.

When Schwarzenegger came clean about his infidelity in May, several news groups speculated that Tanner may have been the child of the union. It has since become public knowledge that the woman who had a child with the Terminator star was the star's former housekeeper Mildred Baena.

The defamation documents filed by the Tousignants read, "Freedom of the press is a valuable right but it is not a license for gossipy tabloids to tar and feather innocent citizens and destroy their reputations for the rags' profit."

The couple is seeking an undetermined amount of compensation for damages it believes to be "in excess of $10 million (£6.25 million)".

Barr Wants Barack Obama's Job

Comedienne Roseanne Barr has announced her intention to run for office as the leader of a new U.S. political party.

The Roseanne star got political during an appearance on Thursday night's Tonight Show with Jay Leno, when she declared she was interested in challenging Barack Obama as president next year.

She told Leno, "I'm totally serious. I want to be part of the debates, because I want to represent the tax payer."

She added, "I'm not for either party (Democrat or Republican) because they both suck and they're both a bunch of criminals, so I made up my own party. It's the Green Tea Party."

Coincidentally, Arnold Schwarzenegger used a past appearance on Leno's late night show to make his run for California Governor official.

Hawke 'Is Dad To Another Daughter'

Ethan Hawke has become a father for a fourth time after his wife gave birth to a baby girl, according to a U.S. report.

The Hollywood actor has two children with his ex-wife Uma Thurman and went on to have a daughter, Clementine, with his kids' former nanny Ryan Shawhughes, who he married in 2008.

Shawhughes gave birth to the couple's second child, a baby girl called India, late last month, according to the New York Post's gossip column, Page Six.

The pair was reportedly spotted out and about with the new arrival at a restaurant in the Big Apple on Friday, with a source telling the publication, "He was introducing the kid to the other people at his table and staff and other people in the restaurant."

India is Hawke's third daughter - he is father to Maya, 12, as well as son Levon, nine, with Thurman. They divorced in 2004.

Wal-mart To Stream Movies On Same Day They’Re Released On DVD

See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news»

Wal-Mart today (Tuesday) began using its dominance as the world’s largest retailer of DVDs to enhance its online video rental service by making movies available for streaming on the same day they are released on DVD. Price: $3.99. The movies are available via Wal-Mart’s Vudu service, which allows connections to television sets via computers and various set-top boxes. An Associated Press report did not indicate whether Wal-Mart signed separate licensing agreements with the studios that permit such early streaming. Most of Netflix’s streaming library is older fare, and several studios even require Netflix to wait 28 days before it can mail out new releases on disc. On the other hand, Netflix allows an unlimited number of movies to be streamed monthly for what Wal-Mart customers will have to pay to watch just two new releases.»

Media Exec: Pirates Spend More On Movies Than Others

See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news»

The former chief information officer of Google, who went on to become COO of New Music for Emi, has disclosed that research he conducted concerning users of the now-shuttered LimeWire peer-to-peer service indicated that those who pirated copyrighted content online were also some of the biggest spenders on such content. As reported by ComputerWorld (via TorrentFreak.com) Douglas C. Merrill told a conference in Sydney, Australia on Tuesday that the tactic of suing persons who download music and movies from pirate sites “is like trying to sell soap by throwing dirt on your customers.” Last week, TorrentFreak reported on another study that also concluded that users of pirate sites “buy more DVDs, visit the cinema more often and on average spend more at the box office than their honest counterparts.”»

Katzenberg Blames Hangover For Panda Fall

One might have supposed that the audiences for the raunchy comedy The Hangover: Part 2 and the family-friendly Kung Fu Panda 2 would be completely different. That apparently is also what DreamWorks Animation execs and chief Jeffrey Katzenberg supposed as well. But in reality, Katzenberg said during a conference call on Tuesday, when the films were released on the same day last May a lot of people who would have gone to see Panda decided to see Hangover instead. “I think we had a terrible, terrible calamity in the U.S. and it’s heartbreaking because there’s no recovering from it,” he said. Katzenberg figures that the strong debut of Hangover drew off about $20 million in sales for Panda. The result was a domestic gross of $160 million for the animated feature. Overseas, where it did not face similar competition, the film earned $440 million. Katzenberg, who has long been one of the leading tub-thumpers for 3D, also said that he understood why ticket sales for 3D films have weakened this year: the economy and the poor quality of some 3D releases. However, he added, “even at levels that exist today

Mpa Wins Big Victory Over U.K. Pirates

See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news»

In a landmark decision, a British judge has ruled that BT, the U.K.’s largest Internet service provider, must block a file-sharing website that offers pirated movies. The ruling had been sought by the Mpa, the international arm of the Motion Picture Association of America. In it, Justice Richard Arnold said that BT has been aware that the operators of the Newzbin2 website “infringe copyright on a large scale, and in particular infringe the copyrights of the studios in large numbers of their films and television programs,” In a statement, Mpa official Chris Marcich called the ruling “a victory for millions of people working in the U.K. creative industries and demonstrates that the law of the land must apply online.”»

IMAX’S Not-so-big Quarter

For weeks, IMAX has been touting its record-breaking results from summer releases of such films as Disney’s Cars 2, Paramount’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. It now turns out that it will need those results, which will mostly show up in the third quarter, to offset a dismal first and second quarter that came in well below analysts’ estimates. The company reported net income of $4.6 million, roughly half of what it reported for the same period a year ago ($8.4 million). In a statement, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond blamed the poor showing on the fact that “there were fewer blockbuster titles that are consistent with our brand than in the same period last year.”»

Sundance Filmmakers To Get Help From Institute

Hoping to provide a wider release for the films that are screened at the Sundance Film Festival, the Sundance Institute on Wednesday unveiled a new program that will help filmmakers sell and/or rent their movies via the major video websites, including iTunes, YouTube, Hulu, Amazon.com and its own SundanceNow. Sundance will act as the agent for the filmmakers with those websites but will not seek to profit from any deals, the Institute indicated, although it will presumably take a small lice of the profits to cover its costs. Keri Putnam, the institute’s executive director, told today’s (Thursday) Los Angeles Times that the program was conceived because “many of the films that we support are not finding conventional distriubtion” — largely because their directors need help in that regard.»

Pacino's Daughter Arrested

Al Pacino's daughter has been arrested in New York on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).

Julie Pacino, 21, was detained at a checkpoint in Manhattan in the early hours of Saturday after authorities found her blood alcohol level to be over the legal limit.

The aspiring director is being held in the Manhattan Detention Complex pending arraignment.

Julie is the Scarface star's daughter with acting coach Jan Tarrant.

Damon Protests With Teachers In Washington

Matt Damon took to the streets of Washington D.C. on Saturday to protest with teachers in a rally against standardised testing.

The Good Will Hunting star joined forces with a number of educators for the Save Our Schools March to push for change and put an end to the current practice of measuring students' intelligence with exams.

Addressing the crowd, he said, "As I look at my life today, the things that I value about myself, my imagination, my love of acting, my passion for writing, my love of learning, my curiosity, came from the way that I was parented and taught.

"And none of these qualities that I just mentioned, none of these qualities that I prize so deeply, none of these qualities that have brought me so much joy, that have made me so successful professionally, none of these qualities that make me who I am can be tested."

The issue is particularly personal to Damon - his mother is a teacher and he has three young children set to enrol in America's schooling systems in the coming years.

Winfrey Hit With Trademark Infringement Suit

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey has been slapped with a trademark infringement suit over her use of the catchphrase, "Own Your Power".

Own Your Power Communications, Inc. CEO Simone Kelly-Brown insists she came up with the acronym Oyp, or Own Your Power, according to court papers filed in New Jersey on Thursday.

Kelly-Brown also claims to have registered to obtain exclusive ownership of the motivational slogan at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Winfrey is being sued for unspecified damages.

A spokesperson for Winfrey's Harpo Productions tells EW.com, "Harpo has not been served and we have no information about what allegations are being made."

Von Teese To Launch Fragrance

Dita Von Teese's dream has come true - she's finally landed her very own fragrance line.

The burlesque beauty has struggled to gain a perfume deal as many cosmetic companies feared she wasn't famous enough to carry a brand, but Von Teese's perseverance has paid off - she's now bottled up a number of scents, including peonies and roses, to create Eau de Dita.

She tells Women's Wear Daily, "It's a fragrance for everyone, and I'm really proud of the level of sophistication we reached both with the packaging and the fragrance. There's no fruity vanilla bulls

Sarah Palin Film: A Hit Or A Miss?

Director Stephen K. Bannon’s Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated may only have grossed around $68,000 in its limited debut in ten theaters over the weekend, but Bannon regards that amount as a big success. Bannon noted that the filmmakers used social media and word of mouth rather than expensive advertising and publicity to promote the movie and that several venues that showed it did so in theaters that only sat 95 people or so. “This is a documentary opening against Harry Potter on the toughest weekend of the year. We had small numbers but only in small theaters. In bigger markets, like Orange County, we’ll do $12,000 per screen,” Bannon told the Hollywood Reporter. But while Harry Potter turned out to be the best-reviewed movie of the year, The Undefeated turned out to be the worst. The film received not a single positive review from a major newspaper, magazine, or trade critic.»

Hallows Is Deathly To Box-office Records

Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 shattered one record after another over the weekend, culminating with an estimated $168.6 million domestically for the three days, making it the all-time champion for a regular weekend opener. The previous record, $158.4 million, set in 2008, was held by another Warner Bros. film, The Dark Knight, but that film did not have 3D premium pricing going for it, and it retains the record for the most tickets sold. Earlier, Deathly Hallows broke the record for a midnight debut, for a Friday opener, and for an IMAX debut. Two more records fell overseas, as Warner Bros. announced later on Sunday that the Harry Potter finale earned a record $307 million to bring its worldwide total to $475.6 million, another record. The only other film to open wide, Disney’s Winnie the Pooh, outperformed most estimates, taking in about $8 million to finish in sixth place. Few had expected it to do any better. Disney had already released it overseas in April, where it had performed poorly, despite mostly positive reviews. Disney clearly released the film against Deathly Hallows as an alternative for families with small fry and to set the stage for an end-of-summer DVD release.

Super 8, $1.9 million; 9. (Tie) Midnight in Paris, $1.9 million.

Update:

Final Figures for the Top Five Films

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, $169,189,427

2. Transformers: Dark of the Moon, $21,328,545

3. Horrible Bosses, $17,777,464

4. Zookeeper, $12,330,512

5. Cars 2, $8,407,529»

Will Captain America Take Down Harry?

The Brits and the Yanks will be battling one another on the biggest scale in 235 years when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows goes head-to-head against Captain America at the box office this weekend. As things now appear to critics, it looks like the pride of Hogwarts will prevail, although America’s pride is expected to perform handsomely, too. (On Tuesday, Deathly Hallows became only the third film in history to cross the $200-million mark in five days.) Also expected to perform solidly — although on no where near the scale of Potter and America is the rom-com Friends with Benefits starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis. The movie was reportedly produced for less than $30 million, which is about what many analysts figure its will take in during its opening weekend.»

Movie Reviews: Friends With Benefits

Friends with Benefits may certainly benefit from a number of friends among the critics. Even the few who knock it don’t do so with much scorn. For example, Claudia Puig in USA Today concludes her review by writing, “When it’s good, Friends With Benefits is quite good — especially as it skewers rom-com clichés. And

Movie Reviews: Captain America

Critics have been tough on the plethora of superheroes who have muscled into the megaplexes this year. But they seem to have a warm place in their heart for the latest one, Captain America. “I hope Captain America finds an audience,” Michael Phillips says in the Chicago Sun-Times, seemingly an odd critical comment. Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times remarks that he felt a sense of “pleasure” when he realized “that hey, here is a real movie, not a noisy assembly of incomprehensible special effects.” Not that the effects aren’t special. Several critics agree that they most definitely are. “Like its unapologetically corny hero,” A.O. Scott writes in the New York Times, Captain America “is propelled by unpretentious and plucky ingenuity.” And Claudia Puig in USA Today provides a quote for the ads: “This is the kind of old-fashioned popcorn entertainment summer is made for.” Critics particularly praise the performance of Chris Evans in the title role for pulling it all off. Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News remarks that Evans strikes “the right balance between old-fashioned corniness and retro-style integrity.” Carie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer comments that Evans’s “clean-cut idealism and objectives make old fashioned patriotism look fresh.” And Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times observes that the “part brings out an appealing earnestness and humility in the actor that is certainly not business as usual in the comic book superhero genre.” »

Report: Dreamworks Animation And Netflix Close To A Deal

See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news»

In a deal that signals the ongoing decline of the video disc, DreamWorks Animation is reportedly ready to offer Netflix exclusive rights to stream its films, according to Bloomberg News, which cited a person with knowledge of the situation. The deal could be concluded as early as this week when each company reports quarterly results. DreamWorks Animation has been looking for ways to offset the deep slump in DVD and Blu-ray sales that has affected most of the industry in recent years, while Netflix has been moving away from its disc-by-mail rental service and focusing on its streaming service. The Hollywood Reporter reported that HBO, which currently has an exclusive agreement with Dwa, has agreed to end the contract two years early, thereby giving Netflix access to Dwa movies from the beginning of 2013.»

Ferguson Hired Princess Beatrice Stylist After Wedding Hat Disaster

Former British royal Sarah Ferguson was so upset about the furore surrounding her daughter Princess Beatrice's bizarre royal wedding hat, she hired the youngster a stylist.

The Duchess of York wasn't invited to Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge's April nuptials at Westminster Abbey, and instead spent the big day in a remote Thai jungle.

Her daughters, Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, both attended but received criticism for their odd outfit choices - and although Ferguson insists her eldest daughter "looked beautiful", she employed a short-term fashion consultant to help Beatrice out.

She tells Britain's Hello! magazine, "After the wedding hat thing, I realised I wasn't there enough to go around the shops, so I pulled in the help of (stylist) Charlie Anderson for a few weeks.

"I think it is important that Beatrice doesn't get labelled as having a stylist, because she doesn't have one. She has done it all herself and has immaculate good taste but she was working so hard to get her degree that she didn't have time to go shopping..."

The headwear has since sold for $130,000 (£81,100) on eBay.com, with the proceeds benefiting Unicef and the Children in Crisis charity.

Ill Boyd Ruined Bloom's Romance Hopes

Orlando Bloom's hopes of romance during a trip to Thailand were dashed when his roommate Billy Boyd was struck down with food poisoning.

The British actor and his fellow Lord of the Rings stars Boyd and Dominic Monaghan were on a break in the Far East when Boyd fell ill after eating raw shrimp.

But it was Bloom who suffered the most from the incident - his date deserted him when she realised he was sharing a room with his sickly pal.

Monaghan told fans at the Comic-Con event in California, "We decided to rent a kayak for the day and go paddling over to this island with a restaurant on it. There's this dish which is raw shrimp in chilli oil, super hot, so we order it.

"(Boyd) got the s

Pregnant Alba Celebrates At Baby Shower

Pregnant Jessica Alba was the centre of attention on Sunday as her friends lavished the mum-to-be with gifts at her baby shower.

The Fantasic Four beauty is expecting her second child with husband Cash Warren in September and she celebrated the impending birth with her closest friends and family at a pal's home in West Hollywood.

The star later thanked her best friends on Twitter.com for organising the party, writing, "A million Thank U's 2

Brinkley Avoids 'Resentful' Blogs

Christie Brinkley prefers reading the news in print rather than on the internet - so she can avoid nasty online blogs.

The veteran supermodel, 57, admits she's been the target of cruel comments online and she tends to keep away from the web to stop any further upset.

She tells Britain's Hello! magazine, "I try to read my news in the paper because online can lead you into the blogosphere, which can be one of the ugliest places in the world.

"There's this sense that people resent you for being the age you are and still having a joie de vivre (joy for life) or sense of adventure. People are like, 'Oh please, she's so old'. I'm like, 'Yeah, I haven't died yet'."

Wilde Wants More Female Leads In Sci-fi Films

Actress Olivia Wilde is calling on Hollywood producers to take more "risks" and build sci-fi roles around strong female characters because she's tired of playing the "helpful sidekick".

The movie beauty starred alongside Jeff Bridges and Garrett Hedlund in last year's Tron: Legacy and she appears in new futuristic western Cowboys & Aliens with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford.

Wilde is eager to continue building on her sci-fi credentials, but she hopes she will one day get the chance to follow in Alien star Sigourney Weaver's footsteps and lead the cast in an all-action role.

She tells WENN, "I think there are some great sci-fi films in the works that have some really interesting female roles. It takes people taking risks and understanding the public will go see a movie starring a woman. I think Sigourney proved that so hopefully I'll get to do more sci-fi roles and take on more of the burden on my shoulders of playing the lead as opposed to the wise helpful female sidekick."

But that doesn't mean she's ready to turn her back on her Cowboys & Alien character just yet: "I would really love the opportunity to do a sequel because there's a lot of stories left to explore and (executive producer Steven) Spielberg has some cool ideas, so we'll see.

"The script landed very mysteriously on my doorstep at midnight. I looked at it, 'Cowboys & Aliens' and I read it in an hour and a half. It had a letter inside saying who was involved which was a perfect storm of genius, Steven Spielberg, (director) Jon Favreau, (producer) Brian Grazer; all these people who I really respected."

Pinto Relished Sex Scene With Cavill

Freida Pinto thoroughly enjoyed her first day on the set of action movie Immortals after she was told to jump into bed with Henry Cavill.

The Slumdog Millionaire star plays a priestess who romances Cavill's character Theseus, the king of Athens, in the upcoming film.

Director Tarsem Singh admitted at Comic-Con in California that he felt bad for the Indian beauty because the romp with Cavill was the very first thing he shot for the film.

But the actress insists she was happy to get quickly acquainted with the British hunk, who has been cast as Superman in the highly-anticipated Man of Steel movie.

She says, "How can it be embarrassing? It was with Henry."

Captain America Triumphs Over Harry In America

Just as it had during another war with Great Britain — one that no doubt cost far less than the current one — America returned from crushing defeat last weekend to win the latest weekend at the box office in spectacular fashion. Paramount’s Captain America: The First Avenger blew past the U.K.-produced Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 to wind up with $65.06 million, versus Potter‘s $47.42 million. Total box-office sales for the weekend came to $181.32 million, up almost 17 percent from the same weekend a year ago, when Inception led in its second week with $42.73 million, followed by the debut of Salt with $36.01 million. Nevertheless, it did little to affect the overall numbers for the year. Despite far more films carrying 3D surcharges, revenue is down 6.4 percent for the year against 2010, while attendance is down 7.8 percent.

Queen's Granddaughter Marries

Britain's royal family celebrated another wedding on Saturday as Queen Elizabeth II's granddaughter Zara Phillips married rugby star Mike Tindall in Scotland.

Phillips, daughter of Anne, Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips, exchanged vows with Tindall in a private ceremony attended by The Queen, Prince Charles, Prince Harry and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

Prince William and Catherine, Duchess Of Cambridge also arrived to witness the wedding - the first they have attended since their own nuptials were watched by millions around the globe in April.

Thousands of well-wishers lined the streets of Edinburgh and cheered as the newlyweds emerged from the capital city's Canongate Kirk parish to wave and share a tender kiss.

Celebrations continued with an evening reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where guests enjoyed a Scottish-themed dinner and champagne.

The happy couple, dating since 2003, announced its engagement in December.
